Wallenius adds yet another green car carrier – m/v OBERONPRESS INFORMATION
m/v OBERON, the world's largest and most environmentally adapted car and truck carrying ship, has been delivered to Wallenius Lines. Among a number of environmental features, m/v OBERON is equipped with a ground-breaking ballast water treatment system - PureBallast.
With the incorporation of environmental technology, m/v OBERON embodies our prevailing dedication to being at the forefront of environmental responsibility with a special focus on five different areas: SO2 emissions, NOx emissions, CO2, ballast water treatment and antifouling.
m/v OBERON's design reduces fuel consumption by approximately 20 per cent per transported unit by increased cargo capacity, leading to reduced CO2 emissions. Different technical solutions as for example the twisted leading edge flap-rudder, reduces resistance. Engines with improved combustion have resulted in very low NOx emissions, well below the current international requirements for both the main engine and the auxiliary engines. The engines are operating on low sulphur fuel (max 1.5%).
Chemical free system for ballast water treatment
To treat the ship’s ballast water, a ground-breaking ballast water treatment system has been installed - PureBallast. This system has been developed by sister company Wallenius Water together with Alfa Laval and is the first chemical free system approved by the IMO (International Maritime Organization).
As the Wallenius fleet is using tin-free antifouling since 2000, m/v OBERON is painted with a self-polishing copolymer (SPC), a paint that matches the performance of traditional TBT-based coatings.
Other important environmentally-related features onboard m/v OBERON:
•A Marinfloc Bilge Water Flocculant Plant system that reduces oil in the bilge water, including a White Box for computerized logging
•A Green Passport issued by Lloyds Register providing information on all materials and substances known to be potentially hazardous
•Biodegradable oil is used in all hydraulic systems and in the sterntube seal
•Systems for waste sorting and recycling is implemented
•The use of chemicals has been reduced and the chemicals used are approved according to the strict requirements in our “white list”
•Electronically controlled cylinder oil lubricators have reduced the use of cylinder oil to a minimum
m/v OBERON is the seventh PCTC/LCTC to be delivered to Wallenius since 2006. Over the next four years, Wallenius will take delivery of eight vessels (RoRo, PCTC/LCTC). The total newbuilding programme for Wallenius and its partners and subsidiaries comprise of 37 vessels.
With her 232 metres and 71,673 gross tonnage, she and her sister ship m/v ANIARA are the world’s largest car carriers. m/v OBERON is also built to the highest class of Lloyd’s Register of Shipping.
The vessel’s size and design gives it a carrying capacity of 8,000 cars. Five of its 13 car decks are hoistable and four are strengthened for roll-on roll-off cargo, allowing for maximum cargo-carrying flexibility. OBERON is operated by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, a company jointly owned by Wallenius Lines and Wilhelmsen Lines.
